John Clark, (Richard Gere), a Chicago lawyer who specialises in making out wills, is happily married to Beverly, (Susan Sarandon). But there’s something wrong; John’s in a rut, he does the same things every day, he’s bored and unfulfilled. And then, riding on the elevated railway, he is struck by the sight of a beautiful woman gazing out of the window of a dance academy.John enrols as a beginner, hoping that the lovely Paulina, (Jennifer Lopez), will instruct him. Instead he discovers that he, and two other beginners, Chic, (Bobby Cannavale), and Vern, (Omar Benson Miller), are to be taught by the owner of the Academy, Miss Mitzi, (Anita Gilette).John doesn’t tell Beverly why he’s late home so often, and she begins to suspect he’s having an affair. She turns to a private detective, Richard Jenkins. What distinguishes this film is not Peter Chelsom’s routine direction but the performances. Richard Gere is a likeable protagonist, Jennifer Lopez is drop dead gorgeous, and Susan Sarandon brings her usual brand of brittle intelligence to the role of the wife. But it’s the minor players who provide most of the pleasure. Stanley Tucci is hilarious, displaying hitherto untapped talent for physical comedy, and there’s strong support from Anita Gilette, Omar Benson Miller, Bobby Cannavale and the excellent Lisa Ann Walter, who plays the woman who becomes John’s dance partner.
